ABOUT

Waverly Low Rent Housing Agency manages two federally subsidized apartment complexes for the elderly under the direction of the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Waverly Housing Commission. The Waverly Homes and Waverly Manor consist of 100 one bedroom apartments which make up two thirds of the Waverly Senior Housing Community.  Persons 62 years of age and over are eligible.  Persons under age 62 and on social security disability are also eligible.  Residents must be capable of managing their own daily living or have care provided within their household. Qualifying individuals pay a rent amount that is approximately 30% of their gross monthly income.

 

Red Cedar Place (RCP) is the third and NEWEST addition to the Waverly Senior Housing community. Managed by the Waverly Housing Commission it consists of 15 one and two bedroom apartments and is now renting. RCP is a two story building with an elevator and was created for independent senior (62 and older) living.  This is not a federally subsidized property. Tenants will be responsible for a set amount of rent and electricity costs.  Rent for a one bedroom apartment is $600 and a two bedroom apartment is $850.

COMMUNITY LIFE

Waverly Senior Housing residents engage in a number of  community activities including coffee hour, craft classes, devotions, Bible study, cards, bingo, dominoes, potluck dinners and other programs and activities.  The housing projects are near churches, the Waverly Health Center, the public library, medical clinics and shopping.  The Regional Transit System van provides transportation, Monday through Friday by appointment made in advance for a nominal fee.

The city of Waverly has a very active Senior Citizen Center which provides programs and services for the elderly.  They offer group activities and noontime meals.  Several churches provide cost free evening meals in Waverly.  There is also a mobile food pantry in town. Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging (NEI3A) provides a number of community based services as well as meals delivered to tenants homes.  Bartels Home Care is available for those who need help with light housekeeping, grocery shopping and laundry.
